FREE SPOKEN WORD OPEN MIC!

Soon it will be the second Monday of the month, meaning it is almost time for you to bring up to five minutes of your word based goodness along for a free slot at a free event that happens every single month…

FREE SPOKEN WORD OPEN MIC! FIVE MINUTE SLOTS!

This month, RARA will be hosted by the lovely FRANCESCA MURPHY and because he keeps showing up WILL FORD. Together, and in the spirit of modernity (ie crashing two words together to make one word), Fran and Will are FRILL

STOP THE PRESS

Sadly, due to circumstances beyond our control Fran Murphy will not be able to join us but FRAN SMITH has kindly agreed to help out, so this month RARA will be hosted by:

GENERAL BLURB!

Whether you are an old hand behind the mic, a relative newbie or wondering what it might be like to share your words for the very first time, RARA will welcome you with open arms and offer open ears while listening to your opening and closing mouth. “Be as silly or as serious as you want to be, for five minutes” is the invitation RARA extends to you…

RARA is brought to you each month in association with Dave Daggers, Will Ford and the very kind people at the Mackintosh Sports and Social Club, Keppoch Street, Roath, Cardiff.

But without the lovely, inventive, enthusiastic and incredibly beautiful people who come along to share their letter based creations there could be no RARA, so thank you if you have ever come along before, and future thanks are waiting for those yet to enter the friendly, welcoming atmos of a RARA night, where variety is guaranteed, laughs can be anticipated and provocation of thought and sometimes a touch of bemused mystification are part of the mix of material you will encounter

Slightly delayed for reasonably reasonable reasons, there now follows a look back at MEGAVERSE@HUB FESTIVAL CARDIFF 2016 via the medium of WORDS, illustrated by PHOTOGRAPHS, all brought to you by the power of MODERN COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY that some have started to refer to as THE INTERNET

hub2016banner

With every year comes the August Bank Holiday Weekend, a special time when  Womanby Street  is taken over by HUB FESTIVAL CARDIFF and every available stage and indoor or outdoor space is occupied by bands, musicians, visual  and performance artists of all kinds, including those whose medium is SPOKEN WORD (presented for the third year  running at HUB by MEGAVERSE) at URBAN TAP HOUSE!!!

FUNNY!   MOVING!  INSPIRING!  BIZARRE!   SEXY!

The above exclamations are just some of the total that would be needed to fully describe the massive variety of words chosen, written down, and read, recited, rapped, shouted, whispered and sung by the following fine people, whose performance pics come to you courtesy of Fran Smith and Patrick Widdess…

MR BLUE

Though he actually performed last, Mr Blue is only 11, and if as he grows, his talents grow with him, maybe one day he will give us back the show he stole from us grown ups*, with a rap and song display that was a wonderful way to close the four hour event! We were all 11 once, and most of us would definitely not have been able to do what Mr Blue did and be a confident and impressive presence at a music and performance arts festival!

*In some cases, the term grown ups may be challenged in the Literary Courts, and proven to be only technically/biologically applicable!

AND NOW…IN ORDER OF APPEARANCE…

WILL FORD

Megaverse organiser and host, Will feels weird about referring to himself in the third person, but that aside, threw a variety of his own pieces into the astonishing mix of material performed on the day, during which Will introduced…

MR BLUE

terblue

Many thanks go out to all who brought their uniquely individual styles of words and performance to make this event what it was, a celebration of perspectives on life and the world we live in (and attempts to make sense of and/or provide entertaining temporary escape from  these things). Thanks to those who willingly embraced a short notice challenge to bring the sexy/teasing/hot/sensual sides of their creativity to the occasion…everybody delivered, and then the whole thing went and got stolen from us grown ups by the final throwdown of words and song by the 11 year old Mr Blue, who joined in as a last minute addition to the open mic section after his father, Eric Ngalle Charles, asked if his son could do some of his own stuff…

THAT’S SHOWBIZ, FOLKS!

Sadly, due to annoying temporary partial deafness I was not there in person, but I was there in spirit, and by all accounts the usual good time was had by all, with a great mix of all that is lyrically profound, emotionally frank and comically bizarre. There were some sadly necessary tributes to David Bowie who passed away the previous day…

If like me, you missed out on this event, you missed missed read, recited, raucously rendered, robustly ranted and some sung performances from…

Kindling the fire (totally NAKED self promotion)

HEY, JUKE…19/01/2016…Spoken word night with some tributes to The Thin White Duke

“It was a reasonable request

From Renn, who’s flamboyantly dressed

Bring a tribute to David B

For this evening at J, U, K E…”

With this affectionate (and slightly cheesy) reworking of the opening of Life On Mars I began my slot during the open mic at…

jukwpic

Will say more about my own Bowie tribute  after the following…

JUKE is a free monthly open mic spoken word event organised and hosted by Renn…

20160119_202716.jpg

Via JUKE (held at The Little Man Coffee C0, third Tuesday every month), Renn aims to provide a showcase for spoken word performance and poetry that explores, stretches and even sometimes breaks the boundaries and delivers the unexpected to the impressive audience numbers JUKE attracts…

Much of the evening is open mic but there are always feature performers and this month they were…

Gemma June Howell, author of ROCK LIFE

20160119_194859

and

Beatbox Hann

20160119_205714.jpg

Gemma’s reading, mostly from Rock Life, played with, argued with and embraced the stereotypical images often portrayed of people from the valleys, filling her words with the realities of life as lived by people who are more often than not mocked for merely existing and being poor. As a council estate born kid who ended being taken into care along with my sisters, I certainly appreciated the humour and fire of poems demanding people consider that there might possibly be more to people from whatever their circumstances are than meets the headlines of our national press

Beatbox Hann, as his name suggests, produced simultaneous sounds from what seemed to be his entire body  assembling grimy heavy beats element by element until there was so much going on at once that the audience reaction can only be summed up as ‘Holy Shit!’

Not only did features set up the mood for the open mic sections, they also returned at the end to combine their talents, with Hann providing the backing for some soulful singing from Gemma…

Gemma and Hann created the frame for the evening and now it is time to fill in the rest of the picture…firstly, given the Bowie tribute theme of the evening, special mention must go to…Fran Smith

20160119_221144.jpg

A lifelong fan of Bowie, Fran turned up having gone ‘The Full Ziggy’ make-up wise and backed up her costume, as did Renn when she opened the night, with poetry constructed from references to classic Bowie hits. Renn and Fran, each of them a Star, Man 🙂

And now, with pictures from Fran and me, an overview of the evening…

Memorable in some ways you had to be there to truly appreciate, Renn’s January  JUKE welcomed a head spinning variety of approaches to the written and spoken word from the warm, to the icy, the intellectual, to the surreal, moments of edginess, hilarity and drama in the verbal selection box that is JUKE. Many thanks to Renn and the venue for what has become a very popular night out!

JUKE will be back in February at The Little Man Coffee Co…

ADDENDUM: My own Bowie Tribute…

Being not the flamboyant type generally, I pushed the boat out according to the parameters of my rather self-conscious personality and deliberately, recklessly wore…

Odd Socks…

Odd socks, odd socks…

We got no one, We got no one
