RARA CROWD
An especially successful RARA!

Every RARA is a different experience, semi-regularly hosted by guest hosts from RARA regulars who after being warmly received often end up wondering what it might be like to act as compere, and we say, if you want to find out, give it a try and we will be there with you to offer all the support, advice and encouragement you need!

The kind management of the Mackintosh Sports Club, Roath, Cardiff generously allow us this monthly platform so that writers from Cardiff and beyond can showcase five minutes of anything they wish as long as it is made of words!

Come, be moved, be amused, be surprised!
Come, move, amuse or surprise others!

Between them, Dave and Will, with the generosity of the Mackintosh Sports Social Club keep RARA running and the door open to all.

COME TO RARA! Enter the world of Spoken Word!
See where you can take it!
See where it can take you!

Second Tuesday every month, Arrive at the Mackintosh Sports Social Club, Keppoch Street, Roath, Cardiff from 7.30pm for approx 8pm start. RARA.

SOME OTHER WORDS NOW FOLLOW

Both Dave and Will like to experiment with different forms of creativity and are very serious about what they do, even if what they do is not always about being serious. On the serious side, Dave has used his photographic skills to help thousands of students celebrate their graduation days and help the work/raise the profile of Touch Trust. And will has just been made Featured Artist of The Week on the Arts For Health and Wellbeing blog  for his work with Cardiff University Health Board.

Freedom to be either serious or silly and for both to be equally welcomed is at the heart of RARA, where what YOU want to say, however you wish to say it, is the most important thing. Dave and Will both embody this ‘ethos’ and love to amuse, but also both have had their more serious sides showcased in exhibitions, in fact, Will’s words (and those of Hilary Griffiths) have been used as inspiration by artists at Cardiff Print Workshop for an exhibition of dozens of pieces of work at an exhibition that happened recently Dave Daggers, a longtime professional photographer, generously visited to take these pics.

Dave’s work has been featured in many more exhibitions than Will’s

MEET YOUR HOSTS

ERIC NGALLE CHARLES

Before you come to RARA, why not tune in to RADIO CARDIFF Monday May 9th 2016 at 3pm where Eric will be discussing his docu-drama ASYLUM…Then, just hours later he’ll be behind the mic at R.A.R.A, introducing the readers and sharing words of his own on what will undoubtedly be another eclectic, far reaching night of humour and heart, as readers take a five minute slot to share their wit and wisdom, to make you smile, make you think, make you wonder, make you listen, make you feel!!!

Eric will be joined by his co-host, R.A.R.A leading light DAVE DAGGERS

davedaggers

His playful exterior is there for all to see, but Dave not only wants to make you smile, his lust for life extends into a joy in seeing others do their best, improve, be all they can be and his enthusiasm is the human energy source behind the continuing success of R.A.R.A!

This time, I can’t go along myself, because I feel like crap as I type this, sweaty, snotty and aches in places you don’t even want to think about. While I like to share my words as often as possible and occasionally host the night, NOBODY would thank me for sharing my current state of flu style nonsense with them, the Latin for which is LURGIUS GIGANTICUS

BATMAN versus SUPERMAN versus JUKE: Superheroes/Villains Special Edition…

P R O L O G U E

March 2016 will welcome the first of two major “Superheroes Decide to Start Punching Each Other For Some Reason”movies when Batman and Superman finally return to the big screen and…basically punch each other in the face a lot then become best pals who join forces to punch somebody who will punch us all, if they don’t punch him first (oh sorry, is that a spoiler?)

JUKE: Every third Tuesday of the month…Cardiff…Open mic at Little Man Coffee Company…Organised, overseen and hosted by RENN

See below for a recap of the February 2016 JUKE, with pics by Paula Hughes (or was it Marty McFly?), then…

February JUKE…Superheroes and Villains…

Hosted by…THE RENN

0006

Fresh from saving Cardiff City from the schemes of the dastardly Doctor Future, The Renn swooped in to welcome all to another wide ranging banquet of wordy goodness

Skits were skitted…verses were versed…poems were poemed…songs were songed…Having previously growled out Do Not Go Gently Into That Dark Knight at JUKE I nearly did it again, but went with something written specifically for the event, Silly Sarcastic Superhero Song

Many tackled the hero/villain theme and presented wildly different takes on heroic/villainous activities, and the real heroes of our lives, family and doctors were not forgotten…unlike the often deserted tragic heroine of Fran Murphy’s heartfelt song, left alone, down on her luck when evildoers run amok, her other half shows lots of pluck, but where is he when she wants to…hug?

Humour and heartbreak and harsh experiences fed the words heard at JUKE. It was a glorious night…Until The Renn’s sworn enemy Doctor Future burst in to interrupt proceedings…. and had to be dealt with in the only way possible…RAP BATTLE!

The Renn Sprays Syllables to Floor Her Nemesis…

0060

Doctor Future Rhymingly Retorts…

0061

The good people at JUKE saw a clear victory for The Renn. The Evil people at JUKE saw matters differently, which just  goes to show that the whole good versus evil thing is sometimes a matter of personal perspective…

E P I L O G U E

Thanks Renn and The Renn (never seen in the same place at the same time, for some reason) and as usual, the event was skilfully tweeted live, by Vincent Thomas

Thanks for the pics, from camera wielding, song singing and poetry slinging Marty McFly costume wearing Paula Hughes!

Had a cool night at JUKE again, and was pleased by the reaction to  my Silly Sarcastic Superhero Song…then stutteringly flustered as I returned to my seat, when The Renn asked if I would write her a theme song. I did write one and it may be heard publicly, if trouble comes to Cardiff City again, prompting the Return of The Renn…
