THE ART OF THE MIND, AT HAFAN Y COED ADULT MENTAL HEALTH UNIT:REGENERATION, RENEWAL, RECOVERY

Hafan y Coed was officially opened Thursday, March 17th 2016…

Here is a little look back over my involvement with this project and the work of many people along the way…

March 11th was a proud and, in various ways, humbling day for me, and marked tangible recognition of the role of the arts in the search for and maintenance of good mental health. Just six days before the official opening of Hafan y Coed came the ‘private view’ of the art that will be on permanent display to promote and help sustain the ethos of the new facility that I personally sum up as Regeneration, Renewal, Recovery

Many months, many people and much work went into making this permanent exhibition  happen, and long may the spirit of this project be continued into the work that goes on at Hafan y Coed.

WORDS UNDER CONSTRUCTION

My words in the process of being put up in the reception/atrium area of Hafan y Coed, the new Adult Mental Health Unit at Llandough Hospital, Cardiff, opening March 17th 2016…to be permanently attached, in metal, opposite the Welsh translation of my words…

CONSTRUCTION COMPLETE…Parts 1-3

1: THE CONCEPT

2: THE ART

A taster of some of the art on permanent display, rather than an attempt to convey the whole experience of seeing the work on site. There is much more to see than one blog can properly convey…

3: THE ARTISTS

I couldn’t fit all the art into one blog, but I can fit in a photo showing all the names of the artistic contributors!

It is a great honour to have some of my words used in this project, and in the years that people see them, I hope that my poetic summation of a positive approach to life may help at least a few people believe in the possibility of better things, that it CAN be true that We Grow Better Tomorrows When We Plant Good Seeds Today.

I had to learn to adopt the attitude summed up in these words in order to survive depression, agoraphobia and social anxiety and, with the help of friends, and skillfully tailored CBT, eventually become someone who could come up with the words that summed up the attitude.

Simplistic on the surface, but words that can be applied to matters concerned with mental health or ANY difficult journey in life, ANY goal of self improvement, ANY need, wish or desire to move on from where we don’t want to be to better places. People seem surprised these days if I describe myself as someone who often lacks self confidence generally or suffers nerves before a performance. But these things remain true. I have merely developed my strengths to the point that my life is far less prey to the feeling of weakness that once defined my entire existence. Experience of the possibility that life can get better, feel better, can be worth living leads to the drive to help others believe it is possible too.

No single arrangement of words offers a solution to the problems people may face in life. But words can bring hope, without which, life is very painful.

We cannot know all that our tomorrows will bring. But We Grow Better Tomorrows When We Plant Good Seeds Today. And any kind of creativity can help any of us be the self we want to be. And there are many kinds of creativity embodied in this project, from the artistic contributors and from many people inside and outside the NHS. Particular massive respect and thanks goes out to project co-ordinator/clinical lead Simone Joslyn, pictured on the day that so much work by her and so many others on this art project finally came to fruition, less than a week before Hafan y Coed officially opened:

WHILE BEING NOMINATED FOR FIVE AWARDS WAS UNDOUBTEDLY EXCITING, IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE ONE OF THE FIVE TO TAKE HOME, BEST SHOW WOULD BE THE ONE THAT REWARDS EVERYBODY FOR THE PART THEY PLAYED IN MAKING THE SHOW HAPPEN…AND THAT’S THE AWARD YOU WON, SO WELL DONE EVERYBODY!!!

A look back at the news of being nominated…

With productions such as Jekyll and Hyde, Sweeney Todd and Godspell under their belts, the hard working folk of  Hilltop took on the roles of these freaky folk

20160209_092051.jpg

Resulting in five N.O.D.A awards nominations, for Best Show, two nominations for Best Performance, one for Special Services to Amateur Theatre and one for Best Stage and Technical Presentation…

After a tryout in Chicago, the original production of The Addams Family Musical opened on Broadway in 2010. Popular the world over, and now popular during its run in the Cardiff area, thanks to Hilltop!

The story for the show hinges on a regular feature of the older TV show comic strips and films, the creepy. kooky, mysterious and spooky world of the Addams Family coming into conflict with unsuspecting normal folk…

The day to day (ab)normality of life at the Addams Mansion is rudely interrupted when Wednesday Addams decides she to wants to marry normal everyday Lucas…Morticia and Gomez flirt and fight in their time honoured fashion over the developing shenanigans…Lurch groans in his servitude…Uncle Fester festers…Thing lends a hand…Little Pugsley is tortured by the situation (as well as being  literally tortured by his belovedly twisted sister)

Many congrats are due, and many fingers are bound to be crossed for success during the N.O.D.A awards ceremony, many thanks guys, you must have worked really hard to pull this off! Colourful, hummable, memorable fun stuff.

Catching up with HEADSTAND poetry podcasts featuring new interviews with MARK CURTIS, DES MANNAY and JOHN ELIOT!!!

12356833_10153864102496095_6214045709032024159_o

A little while back I had the pleasure of being featured in a podcast by HEADSTAND, CLICK HERE to hear, if you wish.

Since then I have been keen to keep anyone who happens upon my blogs up to speed with HEADSTAND, a semi-regular series of podcasts, some music based, others focusing on interviews with poets who perform their work.

Christmas meant I fell behind a little, so am now catching up with the three most recent HEADSTAND poet interviews, which as always, feature readings by the guest and the presenter, and prompts for the listener to contribute to future podcasts…

HEADSTAND

Every poet has their what they write, how they write and why they write and on this blog you will find links to podcasts about those very things, produced and presented by…

Patrick Widdess, the man behind HEADSTAND

12341265_10153862168566095_7637680291008355877_n

Patrick (author of Feeding The Spacemen) is a performance poet himself and has a keen interest in  the what, how and why, when it comes to the work of  his fellow poets.

Click on the links below to be taken on  journeys with Patrick to find out what poets have to say for themselves…

MARK CURTIS

12509757_527135050780244_1907870075195028604_n

A prolific writer on themes both intensely personal and universal, Mark is an enthusiastic and regular performer at open mics. Questioning assumptions about us as people and often exploring the effects of traumatic experience, Mark uses writing to find balance within himself, and, indeed, balances out his more serious writing with other more imaginative and humorous writing, sometimes with a tinge of comic horror.

CLICK HERE to listen to the interview, during which Mark offers the prompt ‘Balance’ and listeners are invited to write whatever feels appropriate to them on this theme. Patrick will select contributions to read out in the next poetry related HEADSTAND. Indeed, this podcast features responses to the prompt of  ‘You Have Three Minutes Left To Live, What Is Your Final Message To The World’ offered in the previous HEADSTAND poetry podcast featuring…

DES MANNAY

07

Driven by the desire to contribute to the cause of Social Justice, Des storms into open mic nights and competitions as a ‘Hooligan Poet’ shaking his fist at the causes of injustice as he perceives them, principally the grasping greed fed, but never satisfied, by the empty calories of Capitalism.

Unashamedly left leaning, with his political heart worn proudly on his sleeve, Des is not immune to the stirrings of the more romantic heart style, rarely more so than via the words of Remote Console, with its tale of unrequited love. CLICK HERE to listen and find out more about Des’s achievements during a hectic last twelve months. During the podcast you will hear responses to the prompt ‘Baby Shoes’ offered during the previous HEADSTAND podcast featuring…

JOHN ELIOT

12347958_10153862168691095_512542779195412648_n

John Eliot (author of SSH) waxes lyrical about poetry and how it can help people connect with each other. CLICK HERE to listen. Serious and subtle in performance compared to some of the more outlandish performance poets but it isn’t compulsory to be loud, and like most of us, John enjoys more than one type of writing and his attendance and readings at spoken word events demonstrates he is certainly a supporter of all kinds of self expression. The podcast includes responses to the prompt from the previous interview featuring Christina Thatcher, for words on looking at the aspects of life that are, on the surface, mundane, yet hold their own entire world of meaning…
